It’s a simple exercise…at the end of the day, consider what you’ve thrown away in your garbage can and re-consider how much of it really needs to end up in a landfill? Our landfills are so compressed with food waste, that much of it doesn’t even get decomposed. 40% of the lead found in our landfills comes from electronic waste. It’s not hard to imagine what our planet would look like if we just thought about what we consume and what we waste.
So, come join our environmental partners to learn about how you can make every day decisions that will have you looking at “getting wasted” a little differently.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
*This week, collect all of your electronics that you don’t use and bring them to the Hester Street Fair to have it responsibly recycled by the Lower East Side Ecology Center.
*Go ahead, just collect one week of kitchen scraps and food waste (store in a plastic container in your fridge) and bring it to our compost site at the Fair. You’ll be shocked to see how much of your garbage is food that can be very easily composted!
*Thing twice before buying something that has unnecessary packaging. Support businesses that understand we don’t need to create more waste to feel good about purchasing a product.
*Shop and eat local. Shop at farmer’s markets and consider a “low-mileage diet” where your food comes from some place that doesn’t need to have trucks and airplanes to get the meal to your plate. Our Hester Greenmarket is open every Sunday and this weekend will be running special farm fresh programs for the whole family.
*Get all of that clothing out of your house! Wearable Collections takes your unwanted fabric materials, clothing, etc., and recycles all of it and raises money for communities in need.
*And most importantly, spread the word about Zero Waste to your neighbors and encourage your community to consider getting a little less wasted this weekend!
